There are multiple great opportunities for photonic technology to make healthcare more accessible and affordable. In the upcoming years, photonic integration in the technologies used for healthcare will increase rapidly. Photonics has the ability to measure blood saturation, scanning a suspicious birthmark or taking a heart image from home without having to go to a hospital.

Photonics is similar to electronics. The difference lies in the use of photons to transmit information instead of the standard use of electrons. Many Dutch start-ups are looking at these opportunities to see on which technologies photonics can be applied to increase efficiency or effectiveness. For example, photonics has already been proven useful in detecting cancer cells early, as well as the examination of clotting factor in blood.
